About Me
My name is Jessica, but I also go by Jess. I’m a seventeen-year-old Melburnian who has just finished her VCE after two years of study. Next up, university — a Bachelor of Arts, because the humanities are the most interesting of all areas of study.
I live in suburbia with my parents, my younger sister Emma, and my darling cat Tigger. I also have a bossy grandmother who visits once a week. I have something called Klippel-Feil Syndrome which, honestly, is rarely on my mind. What is on my mind considerably more often than KFS is my extreme lack of height. I’m 148cm, or 4’10.25”. (That .25” makes all the difference!)
I take a strong interest in politics (as you may have guessed from the topics of my entries). I tend to approach things from the standpoint that there are three important aspects to any society — freedom, sustainability, and the welfare of the people. If you get that, you should get where I’m coming from on anything else. I don’t “get” nationalism, I loathe militarism, and I’m an atheist. Just to fill in some of the blanks of the things I don’t believe in.
I’m usually cynical and often snarky. I deadpan a lot. There are people who don’t seem to understand what deadpanning is and I have received my fair share of horrified reactions as people take me seriously when they really shouldn’t have. As for my cynicism, it fuels a proud anti-authoritarian strain. In my defence, I’m descended from the guy who lead the only military coup in Australian history; I’d be betraying my roots to be anything else.
Some of my weaknesses are coffee, delicious baked goods, and small furry animals. Some of my interests, other than politics, include (click the links to see the posts about that topic):
- languages: I am an ashamed monolingual Anglophone, but I hope to change this one day.
- music: In particular, I love to listen to music that captures my emotions and feels like it amplifies them. I can’t explain what I love about music properly, but it’s something like that.
- writing: I’ve always loved telling stories and I’ve never quite grown out of it, although I tend to spend forever working on the same thing and never finish it.
- technology and the Internet: I love gadgets, I am fluent in XHTML and CSS (even if I don’t enjoy coding for the web like I used to), and I spend a lot of my time on the Internet.
- history: But this is, in my mind, the same thing as politics, since the parts of history I love are the political parts.
