Reflections on 2009

Almost one year ago, I wrote a post called Reflections on 2008, summarising the year which had just gone by. According to that post, I did much the same thing at the ends of 2006 and 2007, but I don’t remember writing those posts (does this mean I’m getting old??), so all I have to go by is 2008.

And I guess it would be wrong to pretend that I’m the only one who writes these end-of-year wrap-ups. Seemingly most bloggers do, so I’m hardly unique. However, no other blogger has had the year I have had, so at the very least, the content of the wrap-up has to be unique. Read More »

97.85

Today was the all-important day VCE students everywhere have been waiting for… results day! Let’s start with the most important part: the ENTER. My percentile ranking is 97.85, which is fantastic, and more than I was hoping for so yesss! I had a feeling I would get 94, because if I got 95 I’d be eligible for a merit scholarship to my university of choice, and I felt that knowing my luck I’d probably miss out by one point.

But I didn’t. So, unless there were a ton of scholarship applicants, I won’t have to rely on the Commonwealth to pay for my undergraduate degree, and I won’t have to pay them back for it afterwards! But I’ll actually find out whether I got it in February, I think.

With that out of the way, let’s continue with a study score matrix:

SubjectGA1GA2GA3SSSSS
EnglishA+A+A+4342.87

RevolutionsA+A+A4041.57
PhilosophyA+A+A+4445.01
PsychologyAAB+3634.77
International Studies1A+A+B3739.78

If you don’t get what the GA#s or (S)SSs are that’s fine, because I will now narrate this table, by subject (or if you want to skip the narration, you can read the TL;DR version): Read More »

Murray-Darling Basin Revolution + GTAV’s map-making skills

So, I have this friend. He was in my Psychology and Geography classes. In Psychology one day, a few weeks before our all-important year 12 exams, we were talking about how closely related all our subjects were. In particular, I was defending my strategy of studying Revolutions to the exclusion of all the other subjects I do.

“Revolutions relates to everything,” I said. “In English, I can talk about revolutions. In Philosophy, I can talk about revolutions. In Psychology, we’re studying conditioning and that was used in revolutions. See?”

“How about Geography?” he asked.

I thought about it. “No… I don’t think it does relate to Geography.”

“Um, what are you talking about?” he demanded. “MURRAY-DARLING BASIN REVOLUTION.”

I laughed. “Hm, funnily enough, I haven’t heard of that revolution.”

“That’s because it hasn’t happened yet. We have to make it happen.”

“Yes, they need a revolution. Too much unsustainable use of water. They need radical changes to force them to use their resources in a sustainable manner… and to stop growing cotton.”

“Yeah, see? That’s what I’m talking about!” Read More »

# The thing about doing a year 12 exam is that promptly afterwards, everyone you know starts asking how you went. The definitive answer is that I went okay; I can’t think of any glaring problems with any essay I wrote. The topics were uninspiring, especially the media analysis article, which was rubbish. I usually don’t care how boring the issue is, even if it’s about cutting down trees, because I enjoy deconstructing the manipulative language used by people to persuade. People can actually be sneaky and manipulative on the most mundane of issues (see trees). But this time, we got an article where barely any persuasive techniques were used at all. Disappointment.
# The first of my year 12 exams, English, is tomorrow. It’ll be such a relief to have it over — for weeks I’ve had to live with the guilt of knowing I should have been studying, but wasn’t. Well, not for English. History, yes; Psychology, to some extent; English, no. On the bright side, I did the practice stuff I was forced to do in class, and the teacher thought my work was so good that she told me to stop studying. Which was great, because I hadn’t started! Thus, so long as the topics don’t utterly suck, I’m set!
